Jackiem Joyner – Jackiem Joyner (2010)

Jackiem burst onto the scene with his ‘babysoul’ on the tiny ARTizen imprint. His second, ‘Lil’ Man Soul’ on Artistry Music, exploded his pop/urban melodies across the breadth of contemporary jazz consciousness via two #1 singles (’I’m Waiting For You’ and ‘Take Me There’) which have together logged at this writing a total of over 21 weeks at the apex of the charts. His newest, the eponymous ‘Jackiem Joyner’, boasts yet more radio friendly tracks including the single ‘Dance With Me.’ The young composer/producer also stretches into new territory with the Slash-like guitar burn of ‘Push’ and the synchopated marching band drum opening of ‘The Reunion’. All are sure to be favorites on the Joyner concert trail as he maintains double duty with both his bands as part of Keiko Matsui’s outfit. As ever, Jackiem eschews the trends of big-name producers and guests stars, and does almost all of it himself – playing, producing and composing. There are a couple covers: Aerosmith’s ‘I Don’t Want To Miss A Thing’ and the King of Pop’s own ‘Off The Wall’, and a guest guitar solo from Paul Jackson Jr. on ‘Turn It Up’ (which he captured while both were on tour in Reading, PA).

Hey Monday – Beneath It All (2010)

According to lead singer Cassadee Pope, who co-wrote all the songs on the record, the album title is a direct reference to her ‘brutally honest’ lyrics. Hey Monday teamed up with a variety of collaborators on this album, including Matt Scannell (Vertical Horizon), Eric Bazilian and Rob Hyman (The Hooters), Sam Hollander and Dave Katz (Boys Like Girls, Cobra Starship) and Butch Walker (Avril Lavigne, Katy Perry). The lauded songwriters and producers developed such a rapport with Hey Monday that they were able to help the band tap into a more mature pop sound without losing sight of who Hey Monday is.
Trace Adkins – Cowboys Back In Town (2010)

Trace Adkins continues to conquer new worlds. He has long been country music’s alpha male, a man whose commanding presence and once-in-a-generation baritone have made him a pillar of the contemporary Nashville sound. But such are his other gifts a restless intellect, wide-ranging interests, great ability as a communicator that it was perhaps inevitable that his influence would spread well beyond the bounds of the genre. In the past decade, Trace has made his mark as an actor, both on television and in the movies, an author, a voiceover artist and commercial spokesman, a social commenter, and a reality show participant. His effect on businessman and showman Donald Trump was such that after his initial and highly successful appearance on Celebrity Apprentice, he was invited back as a boardroom advisor. He has turned his entertainment articulated views into a well-received book, A Personal Stand; Observations and Opinions from a Freethinking Roughneck, and has even inspired an action comic book series, Luke McBain, that has proven to be one of the genre’s hottest sellers.

El-P – Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3 (2010)

Few artists can combine uncomfortable with catchy; paranoiac with head-nodding; morbid with springy. It’s hard to scare the sh!t out of you while simultaneously keeping your foot moving. Rapper, producer and Def Jux founder El-P knows how to get to parts of the brain others can’t. As a solo artist and frontman for seminal hip-hop group Company Flow or producer of Cannibal Ox, Cage, Mr. Lif, Aesop Rock, NIN, Beck, The Mars Volta (and many, many more), an El-P production can drive you to hide underneath the bed, punch a wall and nod your head all at the same time. Which brings us to Weareallgoingtoburninhellmegamixxx3 (August 3rd, Gold Dust), the sort of, kind of but not really follow-up to his past two mixes of the same name previously released at live shows.
